Biden Admin’s Claims Texas Interfered with Border Agents’ Migrant Rescue Not True, Says Governor

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Texas Governor Greg Abbott is pushing again in opposition to accusations that the Texas Military Department refused to permit Border Patrol brokers to enter a metropolis park within the coronary heart of downtown Eagle Pass to rescue a migrant household who later drowned. The governor referred to as the declare “wholly inaccurate.” On Sunday night, Abbott posted a rebuttal to the accusations on X (previously Twitter), saying the deaths of a migrant lady and her two youngsters had been due to the “Biden Open Border magnet.”

As reported by Breitbart Texas, on Friday night, 33-year-old Virterma de la Sancha and her two youngsters, ages ten and eight, tried to cross the Rio Grande into Eagle Pass alongside with a number of different migrants. After struggling with the currents, members of the group positioned an emergency cellphone name, prompting the arrival of legislation enforcement and navy troopers in Mexico. Shortly after their arrival, authorities in Mexico pulled the lifeless our bodies of the migrant mom and her two youngsters from the Rio Grande.

A supply inside CBP, not approved to talk to the media, advised Breitbart Texas the Border Patrol was contacted to help in rescuing any members of the group who could have reached the United States aspect of the river.  Shortly afterward, in keeping with the supply, a battle ensued concerning entry to the park between members of the Texas National Guard and Border Patrol brokers dispatched to launch a rescue try.

According to a timeline supplied by the Texas Military Department on Sunday, the Border Patrol’s request to enter the park got here after the migrant drownings had already occurred and the our bodies of the household had been being pulled from the water by Mexican authorities. The CBP supply confirmed the likelihood of the timeline with Breitbart Texas, including, “More than likely, they probably had already drowned. There were a lot of moving pieces trying to get state authorities on the phone to gain access and that took time.”

“Having to explain the situation to the guard members at the gate exhausted time as well,” the supply continued. “It’s highly likely, they had drowned already. It only takes a few minutes in that current to go under and disappear”.

The park was seized by the state on Thursday, a day earlier than the drownings. The supply advised Breitbart Texas the transfer additional restricted entry to the river that had already been made tougher by the position of concertina wire, saying, “If you don’t have a boat to conduct rescues, getting through the wire to through a flotation device on foot is near impossible and has been for a while.”

On Saturday, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) issued a statement blaming the deaths on the state that learn partly:

Border Patrol discovered on Friday, January 12, 2024, at roughly 9:00 P.M. {that a} group of six migrants had been in misery as they tried to cross the Rio Grande River. Border Patrol tried to contact the Texas Military Department, the Texas National Guard, and DPS Command Post by phone to relay the knowledge, however had been unsuccessful. Border Patrol brokers then made bodily contact with the Texas Military Department and the Texas National Guard on the Shelby Park Entrance Gate and verbally relayed the knowledge. However, Texas Military Department troopers said they might not grant entry to the migrants – even within the occasion of an emergency – and that they might ship a soldier to analyze the state of affairs.

Earlier at the moment, Saturday, January 13, 2024, the three migrant our bodies had been recovered by Mexican authorities. Border Patrol personnel had been pressured out of Shelby Park earlier this week by the Texas National Guard underneath order of Governor Abbott. In this example, the Texas Military Department and the Texas National Guard didn’t grant entry to Border Patrol brokers to avoid wasting the migrants. This is a tragedy, and the State bears duty.

Abbott rapidly responded on X, posting an announcement by the Texas Military Department that disputed the allegations. The governor’s assertion reads:

The Texas Military Department has continued a radical evaluate of the circumstances surrounding the drowning of migrants within the Rio Grande. Claims of Border Patrol requesting entry to avoid wasting distressed migrants are inaccurate. Claims that TMD prevented Border Patrol from saving the lives of drowning migrants are wholly inaccurate.

At the time that Border Patrol requested entry, the drownings had occurred, Mexican Authorities had been recovering the our bodies, and Border Patrol expressed these information to the TMD personnel on web site. TMD Soldiers had been in direct communication with Border Patrol on the night of 12 January when Border Patrol requested entry to Shelby Park.

Soldiers confirmed that when Border Patrol requested entry to the park they said that Mexican Authorities had already recovered the our bodies of two drowned migrants. Border Patrol particularly requested entry to the park to safe two further migrants that had been presumed to have traveled with the deceased, although had crossed to the boat ramp.

Two migrants had been apprehended by TMD, with one turned over to DPS and the opposite transferred to EMS in response to preliminary hypothermic circumstances. Additionally, TMD remained engaged with lights, night time imaginative and prescient goggles, and thermals to make sure that no further migrants had been within the river or in misery.

As the back-and-forth volley of accusations between the state and federal governments over the deaths of the migrant household group, a authorized showdown between the 2 is prone to come rapidly. On Sunday, Department of Homeland Security General Counsel Jonathan Meyer despatched a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton noting the drownings and asserting the Border Patrol’s statutory proper to enter and patrol land inside 25 miles of the border with out a warrant is being impeded. Meyer’s request for Texas to stop and desist obstructions to the Border Patrol on the park established a deadline of January 17 to conform or face potential motion by the United States Department of Justice.
