Texas Sen. John Cornyn Caves to Lankford Immigration Plot: ‘Unique Leverage’

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has caved to the bipartisan immigration framework that may reward unlawful immigration and solely encourage extra international graduates to take jobs from American graduates.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will journey to the White House on Wednesday to focus on Ukraine help and a possible border deal.

Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) has led negotiations for Republicans over a possible cope with Democrats on border coverage. However, the deal, as at present offered, is functionally useless within the House, as Johnson has nixed any potential consideration of the invoice. Instead, Johnson has stated that the House should think about the House Republican-passed border invoice, H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act.

Senate Republican management has pushed again on Johnson’s argument, believing now’s the time for a border invoice. Cornyn has stated Republicans have to exploit the “unique leverage” that’s the Democrat want for extra Ukraine help.

“[We have] unique leverage because of the Ukraine funding. Even when we had the majority in the House, the Senate and the White House, we still couldn’t get 60 votes for some of the things that Sen. Lankford is negotiating on now,” Cornyn explained to Punchbowl News.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) stated, “There is absolutely no way that we would get the kind of border policy that’s being talked about right now with a Republican majority in the Senate…”

“This is a unique moment in time. It’s an opportunity to get some really conservative border [policies] that we haven’t been able to get for 40 years,” he added.

Breitbart News’s Neil Munro reported about how there are few provisions within the Lankford-led immigration proposal to restrict immigration.

“There’s nothing in there that [restricts immigration], in fact, it’s just going to encourage more people to come,” stated Chris Chmielenski, president of the Immigration Accountability Project.

Chimielenski continued, detailing the framework:

Border deal would:

1) Increase inexperienced playing cards by 50,000/12 months

2) Work permits for grownup kids of H-1B holders

3) Immediate work permits to each unlawful alien launched from custody

4) Taxpayer funded legal professionals to sure UACs and mentally incompetent aliens

5) Expulsion authority for a restricted variety of days ONLY if encounters exceed 5k/day over a seven day interval

6) Restricts parole for individuals who enter with out authorization between ports of entry

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) stated the deal is a “sellout” and argued it might “continue to allow illegal immigration:”

It’s saying, “Oh, we’ll let 5,000 people come illegally a day, and then after that, we might try to stop the next 5,000 that day.” It’s fully a sellout.

But it’s as a result of folks like Senator [Mitch] McConnell care extra about Ukraine than anything — greater than the border, greater than anything. He needs to ship $60 billion of your cash to Ukraine. On this concern, he’s extra aligned with Biden. On the difficulty of funding, of sending your cash to Ukraine and sending it in every single place all over the world, McConnell is rather more carefully aligned with Biden than he’s with the Republican Party.

Wall Street Journal ballot released forward of the Iowa Caucus discovered that 59 p.c of Iowa registered voters consider that immigration is a very powerful concern dealing with the nation.

Sixty p.c of stated voters believe that immigration within the U.S. typically do extra to damage the nation, in contrast to 46 p.c who suppose they often do extra to assist the nation.
